The newer trait of YieldGard+ in corn is showing great promise in fighting corn rootworm of the irrigated fields of the Western Corn Belt. Here a young agronomist with Monsanto is making root measurements to determine the effects earlier larvae damage was to the entire rooting system. With strip-till the corn’s root environment has a fighting chance to get going early in the spring and with varieties expressing a protein that will kill young rootworm larvae, farmers have a chance to fight the insects. We are observing root depth improved by 7 to 22% when farmers plant YieldGard corn hybrids.
